VR Dome at MIT
Every October in Boston, the MIT HUBweek festival hosted by MIT, Harvard University, the Boston Globe and Massachussets General Hospital brings together researchers, creators and innovators. The experimental art exhibition at HUBweek presents solutions that can combine art, technology and science with social impact. The idea of presenting the history of the Boston Globe in an immersive way during this event seemed quite a challenge. Especially considering the fact that this famous American newspaper was created in the 19th century and is still in operation.
Fulldome video player
The Boston Globe opted for the fulldome format. Freedomes supplied the geodesic dome and hardware installation. Content – amazing video showing over 100 years of newspaper history in important pieces of articles was created and provided by Inphantry Agency. The timing did not leave room for manual work and conversion. Our fulldome video player has done the heavy lifting and converted the video to fulldome format automatically. It was also responsible for playing the video throughout the show.
Result
Upon entering the dome, the viewers immediately immersed themselves in the virtual space (without special headphones or other devices). All historic milestones since the inception of the Boston Globe Foundation were presented to approximately 5,000 visitors in 2 days. The project could not go unnoticed by journalists. It got notable media mentions and was included in the MIT Hubweek review.
